Nevada Paiute get into Canna-Business
According to media, the largest marijuana dispensary in the country opened its doors near downtown Las Vegas last month – Today they announced that they now have a Drive Thru up and operational as of this morning and it’s officially operating 24 hours a day 7 days per week! Not only is this the first of it's kind because of their drive-thru. but it's also the first retail cannabis store to open in Nevada on tribal land.
Governor Brian Sandoval signed a pact with Nevada tribes granting them the state’s protection to jump into the marijuana business. Senate Bill 375, passed by the 2017 Legislature, opened the door for legal negotiations on the use and sale of marijuana on tribal lands. The bill also allowed the governor’s office to bypass federal laws that limit commerce talks between tribes and Congress.
That bill was signed into law on June 2, and a compact between Gov. Brian Sandoval’s office and the Las Vegas Paiutes for the new pot store was signed by the Nevada governor on July 18
"NuWu actually means 'the people,'"
The tribe partnered with an Albuquerque-based company called "Ultra Health" who's also been in discussions with at least 20 other tribes in three different states who they believe can be swayed into considering using their sovereign nation status to get into the medical marijuana business.
In February 2016, the tribe broke ground on a 3,000-square-foot medical marijuana dispensary in the same area, an 84,000-square-foot cultivation facility and 10,000-square-foot production facility on the Snow Mountain Reservation in the northwest Las Vegas Valley on the Paiute Snow Mountain campus in the northwest. There will also be the three 28,000 square foot greenhouses to grow the weed, a 10,000 square foot warehouse and kitchen to formulate it, and a stylish dispensary to sell it. NuWu plans to eventually stay open for 24 hours and establish a drive-through service for customers. The project is said to have cost roughly $5 million to get up and running, which they did about the middle of October of this year.
A manager at the dispensary explained to local media that though customers pay the exact same amount in taxes as they will at all other Nevada regulated dispensaries, but that the money will actually go 100% to the tribe instead of the state, saying that the money will go toward things like health services and such for the benefit of the tribal members. Some local residents expressed some upset about the decision and say they feel the tribes should have to give some sort of the revenue to the state while others say they are glad to see the state not exploiting the tribes as history has for long shown our government to do at will.
Nuwu Cannabis opened up at its 15,500-square foot facility last month on Main Street near Washington Avenue, which you can see the beautiful facility in the photograph immediately to your left here should be hard to miss if your looking for it, though the picture doesn't really do the facility justice in our humble opinion.
The marketplace is just 2 blocks from Fremont Street at 1235 Paiute Circle, Las Vegas NV

So, in addition to the Marketplace, the tribes cannabis facilities will also include a couple of greenhouses they describe as being "larger than a couple of football fields". About 150-200 tribal leaders and families celebrated the announcement with industry members and elected officials in a private gathering inside the new 15,500 square-foot Nuwu Cannabis Marketplace prior to their opening back in October. The ceremony also featured traditional Native American songs, chants and dances performed by birdsingers from tribes across Nevada.
Contrary to what most people expected, the tribe actually removed the slot machines from its smoke shops to keep any form of gaming away from cannabis. NUWU stockpiled over 500 cannabis products within their 170 feet of display counters that are solely dedicated to recreational cannabis use, which has just also been approved by the state this year. They say their goal of hope is to soon expand their product inventory to over 1,000 different items and to serve anywhere from 2,000 to 3,000 customers per day which shouldn't be too hard to achieve as Nevada continues cautiously opening their doors and borders to recreational cannabis users. Nevada has long been a focal destination for gambling and all-night long partying and we're certain that by opening the flood gates for cannabis will only heighten tourism to the state even more.
