INTRODUCTION:

Perhaps you have heard of the Amanita muscaria mushroom? This is the large red mushroom with white spots that is commonly found in fairy-tales, movies, children’s books and video games. What most people don’t know is that this mushroom is important to understanding the religious writings found on our planet. In fact, as we will be showing in this book, an understanding of this mushroom is absolutely essential to really understanding religion, humanity, consciousness and our role as humans on this planet.

The foundations of religious concepts are actually based upon humans interpreting, elaborating upon, mythologizing about and reflecting within the experiences afforded humanity by way of the most unusual substances man has encountered on this planet, mushrooms (and other psychoactive plants).

The primary plant, bedecked in it’s royal red and golden robes -upon its ivory pillars and speckled with studded gems, easily discovered supporting the foundations of religion is the A. muscaria mushroom. It comes as no surprise to anyone who has been fortunate enough to find it in nature that they have attracted so much attention over the millennia.

Those who gave these forest gifts the taste test found them quite good to eat when cooked. They do need to be cooked (or dried) due to the presence of the alkaloid ibotenic acid. Ibotenic acid converts (decarboxylates) into muscimol when heated, dried or metabolized by the human body. As long as the mushrooms were eaten in a moderate quantity, cooked, they were a gourmet’s delight. Things start getting interesting when the quantity of mushrooms ingested increases and this is the point where the reason for this book begins to take shape.

It is arguable that the religions of our world actually have any value at all, but it is our view that if they do it must be found within and based upon truth and a proper understanding of the root teachings rather than what it is that these schools of thought are actually currently saying.

Mankind's connections with other life forms on this planet, including the plant kingdom, are often dismissed as trivial or irrelevant to modern man. Plants that produce altered states of consciousness are similarly dismissed, or even reviled as something at odds with the normal human state. But this is anything but the case. In fact the knowledge and usage of these plants may be the most important thing man has ever known.

Humanity has been passing down the information about these plants to the generations to follow for thousands of years. Our ancestors related this information through myth, art and ritual so each successive generation could move forward gaining more and more knowledge as time moved forward. Over the course of millions of years of human evolution (if we are to realize this) evolutionary leaps were achieved through changes in diet, one of the solid facts we can point at as contributing to our polymorphous characteristics.

Each of the thousands of consciousness expanding substances on our planet is responsible for a unique contribution to our genetic makeup and heritage as well as the existence of tailor made receptor sites in our brains. There is no other explanation for the various receptor sites within the brain whose one and only apparent function is to activate when specific plant compounds are introduced.

This is clearly one of the miracles of life and explanations for the phenomenon we call consciousness. The reality is that the plants that expand (multidimensionalize) consciousness are truly the bounty of the gods. We are talking about substances that have played a role in the evolutionary genetic and chemical libraries of the human brain as well as the cosmology of the mind (myth and religion).

In a larger picture these earthly and heavenly gifts have contributed to humanity's ability to transcend the body. Journeys within the vibratory fields (dimensions) generated by these plants are reportedly filled with beings, places and indescribable things. These things have materialized into reality having manifested themselves into human myth and imagination. Either that or these real things have manifested themselves into our cosmology via our journeys within the realms of consciousness provided by these plants and/or chemicals.

The plants are crucial to who humans are and according to many ancient world traditions have been responsible for transforming primitive humanity, possessor of limited life, into beings capable of transcending the physical body and living forever. This is what many of the myths and religious stories are actually about. These plants are very likely to have been instrumental in evolving human brain structure and chemical makeup and even consciousness to the point that remnants of the states achieved through their usage have remained as elements of what we call regular consciousness. Still the usage of certain plants is beneficial to the mind in the extreme, thus we see from the past myths of finding or receiving the gifts of the gods.

Mankind's connection with spiritual and physical beings considered beyond the veil of vision and time is an extremely complex and rewarding study. We can call it philosophy, mythology or even theology but whatever you want to call it, it is a part of every human being's life journey in one way or the other.

This book explores the possibilities and evidence supporting the concept that the unique states produced by these plants are intricately connected to the evolution of religious thought and symbolism on our planet. This information is critical to the understandings needed to evolve the planetary consciousness and move us forward into the enlightened age. Humanity cannot shun and in fact has the obligation to understand the history of and explore these substances that are part of our spiritual and physical cosmology.

It is a basic human right to have access to these plants and if that is not enough then it must be presented that it is also a religious freedom. Abandoning the things which humanity has looked to for spiritual guidance throughout our short history is aptly referred to as the "Abomination which makes desolate" (desolation in the sense that human consciousness has been cut off from those states of consciousness and the presence of divinity which are necessary for human potential and have given humanity a step up in the evolutionary chain). But more importantly these plants are literally humanity's connection with the divine.

Prohibition and the ‘pharmacratic inquisition’ (wars on drugs) are the greatest plights humanity faces today (now being paired with the war on terror), with far reaching tentacles affecting human condition and oppressing freedoms in general all over the globe. Governmental and military industrial machines covertly vie for control of the drug trade under the auspices of drug eradication.

The war against drugs is a war against consciousness and a war against human religious freedom (which will be clear). It is also a war against the competition that grinds populations into poverty. Misinformation and oppression are running rampant while all of humanity is suffering under this delusional spell of prejudice. If you are uneducated in anthropology and/or theology you may feel fear or apprehension to considering what you think you will find herein and run screaming in the opposite direction, however, do not fear. Nothing else on this planet has been the focus of such a media-wide propaganda campaign which means the fear and apprehension are pre-conditioned.

Free yourself from the bonds of disinformation. Humanity must take action to set itself free. This is something you need to know.

The Perennial Religion

Most of human history happened before anyone could communicate very well with each other let alone read or write. The world of evolving humans consisted of very few things, animals, plants, earth, the sun, moon, stars and weather. Most of these things were not understood but that doesn’t mean that humans were not curious about them. When early man found a plant that could alter consciousness it was a thing of great wonder. The plants became sacred, endowed with supernatural abilities and were even worshipped as gods. This inspired early man to develop a relationship with these plants, much as they had worked towards developing a relationship with nature in general, the plants, animals and seasons. The earliest religious concepts were centered on nature and evolved through the use of psychoactive plants into what is generically known as shamanism. As humans gathered into tribal communities the leader was someone with knowledge of seasons, hunting, communication and plants - both healing and poisonous.

The Perennial religion of mankind must have been centered on the ingestion of psychotropics, enhancing the relationship with Nature. Most comparative theologists accept this assertion. Nature worship flourished for a very long time before the invention of writing and mathematics. Trade among communities involved knowledge as well as commodities and the knowledge of special plants was very important. Mushroom knowledge was as important as knowing about plants. The first and foremost basic shared knowledge about plants and mushrooms was the sacred knowledge of which ones were poisonous and which ones were edible. Then there was that higher, and more prized knowledge of the plants and mushrooms that caused effects within the mind. The plants attained celebrity status and became the topics of storytelling. Myth was born and the myths were replete with the things humans knew:other humans, animals, conflict, treasures, plants and super-humans (those who possessed characteristics attributable to the effects gained by ingesting the sacred plants).

When writing and mathematics began to take shape humans added another aspect to their cosmology, now it was possible to map the heavens and the paths of the stars were known and could be calculated and predicted. This ushered in a new phase of human expression as the characters in mythologies and stories could be drawn in constellations in the stars and the myths written in a told throughout the seasons as the constellations moved in predictable paths across the heavens.[JI1]

The Messengers of the Gods

To the ancient world anything (and loosely anyone) that bridges the gap between the heavens and man or by extension between the gods and man is a messenger.  Plants were considered gods and as theology developed into gods being beings [JI2] up in the heavens plants became messengers and intercessors between man and the gods. Angels are considered messengers between mortals and the gods in the same regard. Angels actually are representations of plants or personified representations of the spiritual beings contained within plants.

Contemporary mycolologists display a prolific fascination for mushroom-angel associations. This is commonplace even though the origins of the connection between mushrooms and angels clearly originated within the religio-occultic past rather than the scientific community of botanists who ultimately decide which names stick for mushrooms and plants (even common ones) .

Why there is such a predominance of mushrooms that carry the angel moniker is not such a huge mystery on the surface but when the full story is understood the nature of angels becomes clear.  This is indeed a profound mystery of serious import. The first connection and perhaps the easiest to grasp is a little edible mushroom related to the common Oyster mushroom that grows on trees and logs (cedar, fir, pine and others) that are known as “Angel’s Wings”.

Angel’s wings  (Pleurocybella porrigens) are one-hundred percent worthy of their name’s sake because they literally resemble angel’s wings (or at least angel’s wings as most people commonly expect them to look). They are very beautiful and a known delicacy but absolutely must be cooked before being eaten. This is an important factor to anyone interested in foraging for tasty morsels because there are lots of mushrooms that can be eaten only if cooked and this also comes into play if one wishes to understand the proper way of taking Amanita muscaria (they also must be cooked or dried- or both).

Some mushrooms are deadly poisonous and no amount of cooking will render them safe. Such is our next example of angel nomenclature, the “Destroying Angel”. A deadly poisonous mushroom in the Amanita family that is pure white and looks exactly like an angel complete with flowing gown and synched skirt at the waist. . But this angel will show you the proverbial pearly gates sooner than later, in fact much sooner. Those unfortunate enough to encounter this angel are usually departed permanently within 48 hours.

The “Destroying Angel” (Amanita virosa) contains deadly amatoxins as does another deadly angel-mushroom, the “Avenging Angel” (Amanita phalloides). Both of these mushrooms are deadly and it can’t be stressed enough to never eat any Amanita that is too young to properly identify because these two can look exactly like an un-blossomed Amanita muscaria or Amanita pantherina when they are young.

Another Amanita that retains angel status because of its ability to make one depart permanently is the “Death Angel” (Amanita ocreata). This is another pure white mushroom that is similar in appearance to the Amanita virosa. There are a couple of other Amanitas that commonly receive the various angelic titles because of their deadliness and common names in this regard are not an exact science.

You must wait until an Amanita mushroom matures to correctly identify it and tell whether it is poisonous or not. No mycologist would consider taking any chances with the Amanita group fungi for this very reason; the price of a mistake is just much too high. Besides if you are reading this book we would hope that you stick around to share this information with others and perhaps help them to also stay alive too.

Mushrooms that are symbolically represented in artworks and written mythology are usually ones with special psychoactive properties (Amanitas, Psilocybe et. al.) and angels are used to represent these mushrooms as well as other plants that serve a similar function.  The resulting interpretation is that we conclude the plants literally are the angels. Many mushrooms are commonly called angels of one sort or another. Or to put it another way, the angels (in art and story) are representations of the plants in symbolic form so that they can be understood at different levels of initiation. Take for instance Gabriel; who wears red, white and gold, blows a trumpet and is the means of delivery for messages to mankind from the heavenly realms.

Immaculate Deception

Christianity is a religion with a dubious history, yet many of the doctrines and stories are worth study. It is a religion that was created for political reasons. Constantine, the emperor of Rome, knew one of the most basic tenets of government was the control of its people. The governmental control of people becomes much easier and effective when that government is able to also assume a "divine" authority. Although Rome holds no exclusive right to this idea, they certainly have etched their mark on history, enforcing their particular political machine.

Christianity is the product of a governmental council acquiring and examining as many of the world's religious doctrines they could find; in order to create a "One World [JI3] Religion". They took ideas and doctrine from egyptology, Mithraism, Hinduism, Buddhism, the Torah of the Jews, and many others, picking the parts they wanted to include, altering them as they wished, discarding the parts they did not want included, and finally compiling their own plagiarized (and altered) writings to create the new Catholic (one from all) Bible. Since this was a plagiarized and altered conglomeration of many older works, many symbolic tenets have managed to retain their original meanings.

The primary purpose of this investigation is to explain these hidden meanings in as simple a form as possible. Much linguistic evidence, thoroughly covered by John Allegro in The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross, clearly demonstrates that mushrooms played a huge role in the written word.[JI4]  We will try to shed light on the basic philosophical nature behind the religion by examining and explaining the hidden symbolism in the doctrines themselves, opening up a deeper (though simplified) meaning to the texts.

The original books compiled in the Bible were not historical documents based upon real people but mythology based upon psychoactive plants, celestial cycles, and fertility. In an immaculate deception the Romans in a bloodthirsty bid to dominate the world concretized these myths as historical records, excised the real meanings, replaced the mushroom named Jesus, James, John, Joshua, Jacob, Esau, Adam, Eve, Mary etc. in tales of mythic wisdom with a supernatural god-man named Jesus and other deemed historical personages. This is the reason that the similarities between Jesus and Krishna, Jesus and Mithra, Jesus and Joshua, Jesus and Buddha, Jesus and Tammuz number into the hundreds. This comparative list of savior gods throughout the world is possible because the perennial archetypes have foundation in myth not history.

  • Jesus the mushroom messiah

Jesus should not be thought of as a person at all because this brings up too many problems in understanding Christian writings. Some wish to see Christianity, as a book about one of the world’s great teachers, Jesus Christ but this is a serious mistake. Jesus is the mushroom, the mushroom is god and this fantasy about a god-man is metaphor, not history. The metaphor should reveal that the mushroom is god and when you take the mushroom you become god (god is in you and you are in god) but if you think Jesus is or was a person you miss the truth. For those who think Jesus could have been a man that ate the mushrooms, became god, turned the mushrooms on to his friends (the last supper) and became famous you should relearn the history of the creation of the Bible and the history of the texts used to form the Bible. Please see the reference section in this book on the quest for the historical Jesus if you are still reluctant to accept this statement of fact.[JI5]

Jesus, in scripture says, “I am the fountain of living waters” (Jer 3-13). This is a mushroom metaphor that will be explored much further in scriptures later. Similarly Jesus, through myth, is also the revealer of the "fountain of living waters", as in Rev. 21-6 he will give those who are athirst the living waters. Living waters, blood, manna, flesh, and all this "stuff" is the one and same thing represented in different ways. All represent eating and drinking of a phenomenal substance that produces multi-dimensionality (door), great spiritual learning, and communion, with God being inside of you. While the popular bread (or cracker) and water (or wine) do go inside the body, they certainly lack the substantive qualities that the action of ingesting is supposed to induce. The magical act described as "trans-substantiation" by the Catholic Church (and having various similar doctrines in other Christian religions) has no merit.

The statement that Jesus makes (John 6:53) "Unless you eat and drink you have no life in you" would seem to condemn the replacement of whatever the real thing is with a placebo (substitute). Jesus is the mushroom and is the expected returning messiah. It is the knowledge of who Jesus is and where to find him that has been the event waited for by Christians and the secret of the ages. The Jews and many other religions also await a sort of messiah[JI6]  who will return mankind to his communion with god and this communion is provided by the mushrooms. After all is said and done the Most High is one who knows the secret combination of Amanita and Psilocybe together. Both have their merits individually but historically it was the combining of them both that produced the ultimate experience, and it still does.

Jeremiah 3-11 Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? But my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit.

Jeremiah 3-12 Be ye astonished, Oh ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, saith the Lord.

Jeremiah 3-13 For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

Being astonished at this is only the beginning, being horribly afraid and desolate is what is instructed. Being desolate certainly describes the author's understanding of being cut off from the presence of the Lord (true communion). But how can his people be cut off from the Lord? The answer is apparent in this section. It is because the true fountain of living waters has been forsaken, replaced by cisterns that do not profit (substitute/placebo), and are broken. If a light bulb does not work, it is broken. If an eaten substance that is supposed to produce the described results does not produce these results, then it is broken and (mystical illusions, or delusions, aside) actually worthless.

This is suggestive of a spiritual evolutionary process at work. It becomes more apparent when looking into the Hindu and Buddhist texts pertaining to spiritual evolution. Through the process of reincarnation advancement is made according to knowledge one gains and the discovery and application of key tools for enlightenment found on different levels of the path. One other comment I should make before proceeding is; many things have been written in the myths about the experience at death, where the spiritual journey takes one to the point of going onward to the next level or incarnation. This threshold of achievement is accomplished through the eating of the fruit of the tree of life, the drinking of the living waters, such as in this part of Revelations.

Rev. 7-9 After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;
Rev. 2-17 For the lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

It is interesting that even though these people have died (physically), and are before the throne of God, there is still this mention of the fountains of living waters, which the lamb will lead them to. This is done for the multitudes of all the earth. Who can know the real reason that even spiritually there is a need for this substance? At any level of understanding, it is apparent that the Lamb knows, and so guides the multitudes to the fountain that contains their reward and one can hardly miss taking note that this scene describes a great healing.

Moses is known as the Lawgiver but Moses is much more the archetype mushroom savior. The Hebrew name “Moses” means, “to draw out (of water)” it is the Hebrew word “Mosheh” and when you understand what it means to “draw out” you understand one of the fundamental basics towards becoming an alchemist.[JI7]  The adept “draws out” the energies within plants that are made up of all four elements earth, water, fire and air and these energies are manifested by the particular chemical structures (the drugs contained within). The ancients believed that everything contained a portion of God.

Manna, Matza, Shew Bread placing the bread where the mushroom was picked.

"Manna" means "mushroom". [JI8] However, if you reject the philological (linguistic) evidence proposed by John Allegro and others, perhaps a simple read of the relevant scriptures will sway you towards the possibility, and perhaps you may also begin to understand how the mushroom, anthropomorphically speaking, can become literally the body of god.

Exodus 16-14 And when the dew that lay was gone up, behold, upon the face of the wilderness there lay a small round thing, as small as the hoar frost on the ground.

Exodus 16-19 And Moses said, let no man leave of it till morning.

Exodus 16-20: Notwith-standing they hearkened not unto Moses; but some of them left of it till the morning, and it bred worms, and stank: and Moses was wroth with them.

Mushrooms grow from moisture; such it is that they grow after the dew falls. They appear miraculously because they grow from spores (which are microscopic) and have no seed. In fact, they seem to disappear as mysteriously as they appeared, leaving no visible trace other than a fine dust. Mushrooms, as any mycologist can tell you, left in the sun, or otherwise left to their natural process, begin to rot, breed worms, and also begin to stink. Manna means mushroom philologically, linguistically, and, as you can see, mushrooms physically fit the description given of the substance in these Biblical texts.

According to the Bible there are two mannas, the one the Israelites ate in the desert, and the "Hidden Manna" alluded to within the book of Revelation.

[JI9] To know about the mushroom is to have a key to unlock the doors of scriptural interpretation. An "opening of the seals of the book" could be another way of looking at it. Without the understanding of the hidden meanings behind the symbolism the texts lose their full significance. For instance, reading in the book of St. John, connect the dots and see what it seems to say (with this in mind). Biblical scholars know that reading the reference (center) column, between the columns of scripture reveal hidden connections between symbols, and clarify their meaning. Following these references (the center column) is done below to help guide the context of this exploration therefore the numbers, chapter and verse will appear to be out of context but are in fact references leading the discourse.

St John 14-6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the father but by me.

ref:John 10-9 I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.

ref:John 14-4 And wither I go ye know, and the way ye know.
John 14-16 And I will pray the father, and he shall give you another comforter, that he may abide with you forever; Even the spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you; and shall be in you.

ref:1 John 2-27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you; but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in it

There are many layers of interpretation of scripture, and those that have key understandings get into the deeper meanings. Thinking about what has been said at the surface level, and then looking for connections to the mushroom key may help understand this particular text. There is no way to go to the Father but by him, the door, through which you can go in and out. He will not stay on earth, but leaves behind a comforter, which will dwell among us, and be in us. If something is dwelling with you, and can be in you, you might very well be eating it. It is the door, the comforter, and will be in you. Going in and out can mean after ingesting you multi-dimensionally go into the spiritual realm and return to the mundane world. It will teach you all things may be our most important text, direct communication with plants is direct communication with the gods; the plants can teach you if you let them. This is a description of the substance that you eat, which opens the doorway to the place where you are taught all things.

Understanding this interpretation of deep level symbolism opens up whole new vistas and possibilities for the individual. Perhaps the direct communion with God, sometimes referred to as Gnosis, is not an abstract impossibility if one can get past the alien and unfamiliar concept of the mechanics of it. It must be considered that there may be a deeper level to communion than that communication or dialogue which people can perceive of (or imagine) within his or her own minds. This is telling us that there is something here that is available to us right now. Understood at the surface level this points at something in the future that (hopefully) is to be revealed.

If the conditioning can be broken, and the realization of this hidden thing achieved, then glory to we upon the earth because the time is at hand. Otherwise, it is simply obscured in apologetic runaround by supposed authorities that frantically try to explain why it is not a mushroom, this literal and obvious thing. This also describes an anointing (Greek; Chrisma) with oil and as will be discussed later the oil used for this anointing is no ordinary lubricant. We go right back again to the special holy substance endowing one with the gift of the holy spirit, the door, the comforter, which will dwell with you, and will be in you.

The comforter (it says) the world does not see, or know, but those specially gifted (whom Jesus is speaking to) know, and see, and will have it inside of them. The manna, the door, the comforter is the thing which will teach those who know about it and actually consume it. We can extrapolate this learning to be something enlightening the person to the point they have no need to be taught by anyone. And this, of course, would mean that there is no need for the intercessory function of a priest.

Here again we see that those who know have no need for a church, pastor, prophet, or authority figure here on earth as they have direct communion. Consider the manna (bread) that comes down from heaven, and see if it becomes a little clearer. Especially in regards to this being a synonymous (one and the same) substance that is inside of you. This part expressly stating that you should take and eat. Again, we are following references in the Bible to guide the discourse.

John 6-27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the son of man shall give unto you; for him hath God the father sealed.

John 6-31 Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.

John 6-32 Then Jesus said unto them, verily verily I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my father giveth you the true bread from heaven.
John 6-34 Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.
John 6-35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life.
John 6-41 The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread that came down from heaven.

John 6-43 Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves.
John 6-48 I am that bread of life.

John 6-56 He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.
John 7-38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture has said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

We will deal with the rivers of living water that will flow out of the bellies of those that eat the manna later (Hinduism, Buddhism), prepare yourselves for more need to break the taboos and conditioning that bind you.

The meat, the manna, the door, the comforter, the bread, the living waters, the blood, are all synonymous for that which will dwell with you, and you will put "in" you, that which will teach you all things through direct communion. For those who ascribe to the "official" accepted explanation: namely that Jesus alone is the substance, and that everything else is merely symbolic for him, in the next part we will touch upon the book of Revelations, where (as in John) it says that the world does not see, because it does not know, as opposed to those who know, and see, and will have it in them. Something that the world does not know, because it does not see, is certainly "Hidden" as in the "Hidden Manna".

Rev 2-7 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the Churches; to him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.

Rev 2-17 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the Churches; to him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.

We will come back to the book of Revelations later in its entirety. Manna has been revealed in ancient languages to mean mushroom. It has also been explained that the mushroom is the fruit of the tree of life. Much more on this subject can be found here in the chapters on mushroom host trees. [JRI10] In the next chapter it will be shown that the mushroom is also referred to as a small white stone. The mushroom is the manna, the white stone, the comforter, the door (which you will have in you) that you can enter in and out of that will show you all things.

James 2-14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he have faith, and have not works? Can faith save him?

James 2-15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,
James 2-16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; What doth it profit?

The things that are needful to the body, if we follow the thread of this discourse, are that which will be in you. The door, comforter, manna, blood, bread, stone, works (being descriptive of results achieved by something) is that which can profit you. It might be argued that all is well and that the body needs nothing but belief or faith and transcendence is all in your mind, or even that enlightenment can be achieved by meditation or fasting and chemicals are not a solid requirement. Yet there seems to be direct discrepancy to this supposition as related in these next verses.

John 6-53 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily verily I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.

John 6-5 Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.

John 6-55 For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.
John 6-56 He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.

This clearly saying the eating and drinking is physical. “My body is flesh indeed, and my blood is drink indeed” plus the added statement that when you eat, it is inside of you leaves little room for debate that this is a substance, not a symbol alone. For those who choose to debate this we ask that they show us their substance because according to Jesus' words unless you eat and drink of "It" you have no life in you. By the way, do we really need to mention that this is not some strange reference to cannibalism? We sure hope not, if you still think this, read on. Somewhere, some of this must convince you that he is not saying to take a bite out of his arm, or any other piece of his actual anatomy.

Widening the gap between truth and public opinion

State-ism as Religion

"Pharmacopoeia" is the root of our English "pharmacy" or "pharmacist", and has been also translated as "witchcraft". Indigenous tribes and peoples used various Psychoactive plants as sacramental largely determined by local availability. The social powers, respect, reverence, and authority held by the "pharmacopoeia-practicing" native shaman has always been a major problem for government and religion. It is the wanton jealousy of the power and control held by these natives, which in turn, inspired the campaign to demonize nature worship, goddess worship and shamanism as well as all pharmacopoeias as something of the devil.

The Catholic Church for hundreds of years allowed only two methods of healing, prayer and bloodletting. Anyone using plants to heal was considered a witch and was burned. The Spanish (Catholic) inquisition and witch hunts (the murdering of over eight million people, tried as witches, and the stealing of their land and other properties done in the name of god by the Church-government up until the 19th century) are prime examples of this.

Also related to this church jealousy and greed is the matter of an estimated twenty million indigenous Central Americans murdered (exterminated), bringing about the near extinction of the Aztec, Maya, and Inca peoples, and the all-to-similar fate of indigenous North American Indians. The underlying agenda is the repression of the knowledge of plants. The authorities believed that if it succeeded, this rampage around the world would insure the people's loyalty to established religion in all matters pertaining to god. They wanted everyone to rely upon them for council from god primarily due to the inability of experiencing god for oneself. Since government and religion are the controllers of the world, an independent shaman, priest, mage, magician, or prophet is an obvious threat to their power.

People, who follow the government's lead in this field, without researching the subject on an individual basis, are usually quick to jump to conclusions and condemn things they really know nothing about. Unfortunately, there are many people who have not researched this subject and believe that anything the government or their church says must be true, yet they have absolutely no personal experience or real understanding about the subject other than the government/media-released propaganda and disinformation geared to create their agenda-based opinion; an opinion really based upon ignorance. As you will see, this subject is absolutely a matter of religious practice, and as such, Constitutional rights must protect it.

Within the study of world religions are philosophical systems. These are the philosophies that the respective believer adopts as their understanding of life itself. State-ism must be considered a religion in its own right, as even those who profess no religious preference or belief adopt a philosophical view of reality based upon a state/culturally conditioned belief system. These belief systems are also based upon religious philosophies that are brought into fruition through media and popular opinion. Today many people claim to hold no religious convictions yet maintain what they consider their own morality. Most of the time this individual morality is nothing more that stateism based upon the philosophy of network television.

Were the many state and religious philosophies to be based upon truth and justice the world would not have an incredible history of bloodshed, wars and oppression. Therefore, religions and state indoctrinated belief systems share commonality of basic philosophical principles, and all of them must be looked into with an objective point of view. This must be done in order to dispel falsehood. It is not difficult to see that the condition of life on our planet leaves much to be desired. Societal conditioning plays an important part in developing individual belief systems. In some ways this could be considered a good thing, but in other ways it may be intrinsically bad. We need to explain this in order to set the stage for what is to come within these pages. This is not only an examination of psychedelic plant and religious associations throughout history but is also an examination of some of the religions which show evidence of having psychedelic plant association, yet deny this association due to corruption of their root principles.

The sun, moon and stars played very important roles in the formulation and propagation of religion on our planet. The stories and myths were told by using the constellations in the sky orally long before there was ever writing, advanced math or civilization as we think of it today. In most religious iconography the sun is the center of religious worship on our planet. The sun is the giver of life and this was realized far before mankind could build a shelter of stone. Nature worship, animism and shamanism realized and accepted the sun as a primary force of life and as such afforded it a place in the living stories of their mythology. Even the Bible pays tribute to the stars even though most Christians will tell you that Christianity is diametrically opposed to that evil superstition “astrology”. Astrology is a word taken from the words Astronomy and Theology. Properly the term is astrotheology. Astrotheology is the science of telling stories, myths and legends passed down through the ages through the use of the stars, constellations and planets. All of the heavenly bodies were known to be living organisms. These organisms were given titles as gods and relegated symbolic representations in nature. In art this cosmic pantheon reflected the Greek and Mesopotamian myths that were known throughout the mystery schools. In the Egyptian mystery schools and the secret societies modeled after them there are three major fields of learning, mathematics, reading/writing and astrotheology. This learning was considered sacred and secret because for most of the world it was forbidden to the commoners. The secret knowledge was sacred and secret to the architects and Masons because they held the monopoly on knowing how to build things and this made them a valuable commodity and insured their livelihood amongst those of nobility.

John Allegro

When the Dead Sea scrolls were discovered in 1947 the Jewish and Christian world virtually gasped for air from the excitement. But when John Allegro wrote The Sacred Mushroom and The Cross as an explanation for what was ultimately learned from deciphering the scrolls that gasp for air turned into a breath of fresh air for some and a choking shock for others. The writings were most likely old copies of documents that were rewritten by the Jewish scribes. The Jews practiced a very interesting tradition wherein any time something was written down they never destroyed it. The scripts were not burned, ripped up, thrown away or otherwise disposed of. The older versions, once preserved by copying were put in cylinders and tucked away in caves, exactly like where the shepherd boy found the Dead Sea Scrolls. It is interesting to note that in spite of the explanation given by Allegro, today, most people are still unaware of what the scrolls say.

The Essenes were a group of ascetics monks (that appear to have included some women and children) who lived in Qumran about 14 miles from Jerusalem and it was these monks that are attributed with placing the scrolls in the caves where they were eventually found. They were real strict about observing all of the laws they believed in and punishments for anyone breaking them were swift and definite. All of these laws make them look like very pious and respectable religionists to some people but others see them as a sect of mind-controlled, self-deprecating nuts. In our modern times most people would certainly view them as a whacko cult that lived under horrible conditions under crazy laws. Someone could certainly make a case that the Essenes were out to lunch.

They used a method of scriptural interpretation called “pescher” where they would read scripture and extrapolate it into their own personal lives.

Pescher

("interpretation") (pl. pesharim) is the term applied to the typical Qumran method of interpreting scriptures. Such exegesis played on a word, a passage or an isolated allusion from a Biblical text (most often prophecy), developed it in the most intense and imaginative manner conceivable, and related it to contemporary personages and the life of the community.  Such commentaries resemble Rabbinic midrash and early apocalyptic literature, which are all helpful in our understanding of the NT.

[JI11]

Nevertheless they reportedly were in possession of some very important documents that shed light upon the mushroom cults and their beliefs from the old world.

Host Trees for Amanita muscaria and Amanita pantherina

Amanita muscaria and Amanita pantherina only grow under certain trees because of the relationship they have living in symbiosis. Among the trees that A. muscaria can be found under are primarily conifers, birch and perhaps oak. The related A. pantherina grow under oaks and some of the close to fifty varieties of A. muscaria may also live in symbiosis with the oaks, and occasionally (but more rarely) other tree types. Each of these types of trees can be found in religious worship as representing the tree of life and in this sense can be interpreted as the trees that produce the mushroom “fruit of the tree of life”. Coniferous trees are the most commonly known host trees for the A. muscaria and include pine, fir, spruce, larch, cedar and cypress. Even the Jewish Kabala is known to show the Kabalistic tree of life as the pine tree. The reasoning behind this is simple if you consider the pine tree of Christmas produces the gifts under it and thus the pine tree is a religious symbol. Even the Vatican cannot cover up its reverence towards the pine tree unless the Vatican decides to cover up the main fountain in the central courtyard at St. Peter’s Square. Churches were known for providing water and one of the means to draw followers was to provide water for a town that needed it. These fountain areas were designated as gardens and called “Paradises”. Most of the fountains were designed as cups and were called a “Cantharus”.  The original fountain at Saint Peter’s was one such “cup”.  The original paradise fountain was replaced by the giant bronze, pine-cone shaped Roman fountain acquired from the Baths of Agrippa, behind the Pantheon in about 800 C.E.

EXCERPT FROM  LE MIRACOLE DE ROMA  ("ROME'S WONDERS"), 13TH CENTURY

About St.Peter's Cantharus.

In St.Peter's paradise is the Cantharus, built by pope Symmachus. And it was adorned with columns of porphyry. And it was faced with marble all around. And above were four golden griffons. And the ceiling was made of copper, and adorned with golden flowers. And four copper dolphins above spouted water from their mouths. And in the middle of the Cantharus was a golden pine-cone, which once covered Santa Maria Rotonda's church. Above the pine-cone was the statue of goddess Cybele, mother of all gods. The pine-cone, through a lead pipe, kept pouring water for anybody who wanted it. And by means of a duct that water reached the spire, by the baths of emperor Nero. [JI12]

These associations with the pine cone, paradise and a cup-shaped fountain all connect the mushroom with religious symbolism and the pine cone and pine trees when represented in art oftentimes represent the mushroom itself. The Pope’s staff has a pine cone on it, candlesticks at the Vatican have pine cones and these are not just leftover symbols from the past but identifiers for the secrets hidden under the auspices of traditional religious worship. The Pope’s staff is really the Thyrsus and was sacred to the Greek god Dionysus. The ivy-entwined, pinecone tipped staff is identified by esoteric scholars as a phallic symbol but they miss the deeper understanding. This is all too common for mushroom symbols to be identified as sexual, fertility and phallic rather than mushrooms. Not that they can’t be sexual symbols but getting stuck on that alone, without understanding it further can lead to a obfuscation of the deeper understandings. Interestingly the staff was thought to have magical properties that could be used to obscure the identity of the carrier. In The White Goddess, Robert Graves also traced Dionysus to his psychoactive source, from vine god back to an earlier Dionysus, the Toadstool-god. The Greeks as well as a myriad of other cultures believed that lightning created mushrooms and toadstools because there were no visible seeds as with other plants. When the rulers of Athens, Corinth and Scyon legalized Dionysus-worship in their cities, they watered down the religious worship by limiting the mushroom usage and orgies. Somehow they felt that the religion would be less of a threat if the adherents were required to substitute wine for toadstools; consequently the myth of the Toadstool-Dionysus became attached to the vine- Dionysus.

The Phrygian god Attis is also connected to the pine tree and transforms into a pine tree. Attis dies under the pine and this transformation resonates waves of anthropomorphic overtones. [JI13] Sir James George Frasier in the monumental work The Golden Bough relates:

“Why the Phrygians should have worshipped the pine above other trees we can only guess.”

In spite of his exhaustive research Frasier misses the reason for the association just as millions of people bring a pine into their homes and put presents under it miss the gift of the gods connection with the mushroom. Frasier further comments,

“The story that he was a human being transformed into a pine-tree is only one of those transparent attempts at rationalizing old beliefs which meet us so frequently in mythology. The bringing in of the pine-tree from the woods, decked with violets and woollen bands, is like bringing in the May-tree or Summer-tree in modern folk-custom; and the effigy which was attached to the pine-tree was only a duplicate representative of the tree-spirit Attis.”

Had Frasier lived in a pine grove he might have made the association because he certainly knows how to inter-relate mythology. He further comments in his inquisitive nature, dancing around the secret without knowing it:

“Perhaps the sight of its changeless, though sombre, green cresting the ridges of the high hills above the fading splendour of the autumn woods in the valleys may have seemed to their eyes to mark it out as the seat of a diviner life, of something exempt from the sad vicissitudes of the seasons, constant and eternal as the sky which stooped to meet it. For the same reason, perhaps, ivy was sacred to Attis; at all events, we read that his eunuch priests were tattooed with a pattern of ivy leaves. Another reason for the sanctity of the pine may have been its usefulness. The cones of the stone-pine contain edible nut-like seeds, which have been used as food since antiquity, and are still eaten, for example, by the poorer classes in Rome. Moreover, a wine was brewed from these seeds, and this may partly account for the orgiastic nature of the rites of Cybele, which the ancients compared to those of Dionysus. Further, pinecones were regarded as symbols or rather instruments of fertility. Hence at the festival of the Thesmophoria they were thrown, along with pigs and other agents or emblems of fecundity, into the sacred vaults of Demeter for the purpose of quickening the ground and the wombs of women.”

It is thought that the pine tree is a symbol of eternal life or immortality because it retained its verdure (green coloring) throughout the year but we can now see a deeper reasoning behind the fascination and revering of the pines.  This association with immortality is certainly connected with the mushrooms that are found underneath them because it is the experiencing of the unique consciousness provided by these mushrooms that are known to give one a sense of the immortal nature of the soul.  The pine is also associated with immortality and as such an emblem can be found decorating Assyrian monuments and Etruscan (pre-Roman Rome) funeral urns.

The Egyptian god Osiris is also associated with the pine tree. As the original Green Man he is a vegetative god and when his body was dismembered by his evil brother Set his phallus was discovered growing into a Cedar tree (actually a pine) in Lebanon by his wife Isis who reassembled the pieces and through a combination of sex and magic became pregnant from the corpse and bore Horus. Osiris is the prototype of the Celtic Odin and Germanic Wodin (Wotan, Wodhanaz) who are also associated with death upon trees (also death and rebirth on a tree). We will further examine these Germanic-Norse connections with the oak tree in the next section. Also Frasier relates another pine tree connection between Osiris and Attis:

“The character of Osiris as a tree-spirit was represented very graphically in a ceremony described by Firmicus Maternus. A pine-tree having been cut down, the centre was hollowed out, and with the wood thus excavated an image of Osiris was made, which was then buried like a corpse in the hollow of the tree. It is hard to imagine how the conception of a tree as tenanted by a personal being could be more plainly expressed. The image of Osiris thus made was kept for a year and then burned, exactly as was done with the image of Attis which was attached to the pine-tree. The ceremony of cutting the tree, as described by Firmicus Maternus, appears to be alluded to by Plutarch. It was probably the ritual counterpart of the mythical discovery of the body of Osiris enclosed in the erica-tree. In the hall of Osiris at Denderah the coffin containing the hawk-headed mummy of the god is clearly depicted as enclosed within a tree, apparently a conifer, the trunk and branches of which are seen above and below the coffin. The scene thus corresponds closely both to the myth and to the ceremony described by Firmicus Maternus.”

In ancient Babylonia the pine tree is the tree associated with the “Tree of Life” and the “Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil”. The Cylinder Seal and tablets known as “The Seven Tablets of Creation” were uncovered in the 1800’s and George Smith found the first fragments of the poem in Asurbanipal’s library in 1873.  The cuneiform writings resemble hieroglyphics in the sense that they are pictographic in nature. This allows us to visually identify the tree in the “Epic of Creation” as a pine tree. The tree is shown with two mushroom shaped objects hanging off of the sides of the trunk. This is the earliest known rendition of the creation story and is undoubtedly the source (or one of the source type sources) of the biblical account.  In the Babylonian source the serpent is also always near the “Tree of Life” because the serpent is associated with the Sumerian god “Ea”.

Ernest Busenbark in Symbols, Sex and the Stars explains:

“They (Serpents) were considered to be the embodiment of wisdom, and the water god Ea, of the ancient Sumerians, was commonly called a “serpent god”. They were also identified with Sacred Groves and Tree Worship and ancient tablets and seal cylinders which picture the tree of life almost invariably show a serpent near, or coiled around, the tree.”

The famed cedars of Lebanon are not actually cedars but pine. To the early Chaldeans the cedar was the “Tree of Life” and the name of the god Ea and was supposed to be written on its core.  Again from Busenbark[JI14] :

“To Chaldeans, the cedar represented not only the tree of life but the “revealer of the oracles of earth and heaven” as well.”

The fact that the cedars reveal “oracles of heaven and hell” should not be glossed over. The oracles that are revealed by the cedars are the mushrooms that are found under them. As the fruit of the tree they are the fruit of the tree of life and are the true oracles of the earth and heavens. Also they are the oracles that reveal the secrets of heaven and hell and all points in-between.

Although it would be very interesting to exhaustively relate every god and myth associated with the pine tree it would likely be an impossible task and we cannot even begin to scratch this surface, but a few obvious connections suffice to show pine trees are commonly depicted in myth and artwork because of their association with the mushrooms that grow beneath them and cause a death and rebirth godlike experience for those who take them.

The “Lord of Hosts”

Tightly associated with Christianity, is the word ‘Host’, particularly used as a name for God in the context ‘The Lord of Hosts’.  Specifically, the word has several meanings, some for the layperson, some for the initiated, and some for the enlightened. For the layperson it could seem as if the Lord is throwing a cocktail party and he is the host of the party, the term Lord could mean a status of grandeur and thus the party could be seen described as something magnanimous. Or the Lord owns his own country (or realm) and has extended an invitation to visit or stay with him as a guest for a time. The Lord of Hosts being the Host for your visit.

To the initiated the interpretation becomes more in the line of a party thrown in the heavens and the host gives the invitation. Of course if you are not a member of the right church, you don’t get an invitation. So the initiated know that (in their minds) they will be invited to the biggest party in the universe because they have a personal relationship with the host (Lord).

Also of interest is the idea that whoever is not a member of the right church will be treated by the Host with ‘host-ility’.  This is a scare tactic used by religions to dissuade their membership away from apostasy, or to scare them into joining if their friendly persuasion fails. The idea that an all-powerful and benevolent God would be host-ile to someone simply because they were not a member of the right organization is suspect. It can’t hold water and defies logic unless the attributes of compassion, love, benevolence etc. were removed from the supposed God’s cosmology.

On a side note to this interpretation a host can also be a huge group of people, as in an army. So the Lord of Hosts can be the Lord of huge armies, which is exactly what the stories of a triumphant messianic return indicate. In Christian belief the ‘Lord of Hosts’ is scheduled to return with host-ility along with his host of armies to destroy all the non-believers and cast the evil dragon into the lake of fire, in an extremely host-ile way, see?

Also within the realm of the initiated there is the strange definition of the host being a sacrificial victim. Certainly this can be used in conjunction with the story of Jesus’ first advent as he is considered a sacrificial victim, so in this case the host is sacrificed for the rest of the party. The host can be also a sacrificial offering of other types, such as a lamb or bull (simple at this level and complex at the more esoteric).

Then there are the secret meanings which require further explanation and shed a whole new light on whether one has a personal relationship with the host, or not. These interpretations expand the definitions and contextual understandings of the word ‘host’ to another level, one hidden understanding takes us right into the field of botany.

A host is something which one organism, bacteria, plant etc. attach itself to in order to live. Parasites attach themselves to another organism and thrive off of its energy and substance. So the organism that is used by a parasite is a ‘host’ organism, hosting the other life form, not necessarily by invitation. In fact the uninvited parasite is like an uninvited guest at a party. An uninvited guest to a reluctant host can cause a lot of problems.

Many organisms are parasitic but others, which are associated with a host life form, are not. They are symbiotic life forms, living in harmony with another life form and thriving off of its energy and substance while also feeding the other with its own energy and substance. Mushrooms do this very thing, and the Amanita is one of the most famous for it. The mushroom develops in a relationship with coniferous trees (pine, spruce, cedar etc.) because the mushroom is only the fruiting body of a bigger organism, which actually lives underground. This is the mushroom’s main body, mycelium; an organism that is symbiotic with the tree because it is attached to the tree’s root system and thrives off of the energy and substance of the tree, from its roots. The mycelium is the host for the tree and the tree is the host for the mycelium, and thus the mushroom and these hosts live in a mycorhizal symbiotic relationship with each other. So the mushroom is a host in the botanical, ethnobotanical, esoteric, magical, occultic and alchemical senses of the word.

Some can also see the mushroom as a host for a state of mind, the host to a party in an extra-dimensional realm, the host for a visit to another state of consciousness. The Lord of Hosts in this regard can also be interpreted to mean; of all the various “hosts” that the planet has to offer, in this sense, peyote, Psilocybe (another species of psychedelic mushrooms), marijuana, opium poppies, lily, mandrake, acacia, coca leaves etc. the Lord of all hosts is the Amanita muscaria. It appears to have more religious connections than any other specific entheogen. Its appearance, striking color and majesty (Kings crowns, robes, and scepters are designed after its likeness) make it a brilliant and obvious living presence on our planet. The Lord of Hosts is a perfect euphemism for the mushroom and its esoteric interpretation, in this sense, expounds on the understanding of the meaning of the religion, as a good secret revelation should.

Of course, as would be expected, another meaning for the term host is the sacramental wafer, or consecrated bread, which is of course the body of Jesus, the mushroom, the hidden manna, the symbiotic host of botany which lives under the pine tree (‘Christmas tree’). It bears mentioning here again that the mushroom is also symbiotic with birch trees and the related Amanita pantherina is hosted by the oak trees that are also referred to as the “Tree Of Life” in diverse cultures and areas of the world and stands of these trees are revered as sacred groves all over the planet.

Another word related to host is hostage. This is where a person is kidnapped and hosted by force. One can also be held hostage and not even know it. Hosted by force, through deceit, believers in empty organizations lose out on truth. Religious organizations love to play the host for people that have lots of money they can draw a tithe from. They become hosts but do not give that thing that they are supposed to give if they were truly representing the Lord of Hosts, namely the real host, A. muscaria, not a piece of regular bread (placebo). The Catholic doctrine of transubstantiation is a good example of an organization holding believers hostage, where the true sacrament is not given to a church member but is removed and hidden, replaced by a wafer. Most every Christian church deals with the sacrament a little differently, replacing the real substance with wafers, wine, bread, snack cakes, matza or a number of other things.

So the true Lord of Hosts has been replaced by a substitute that does not do those magical, wondrous things to the person partaking of the sacrament. Those who participate in these ceremonies are being held host-age by false Lords of Hosts (bread/wafer). The act of substituting a fake sacrament and hiding this crucial element of the religion from the participant is a host-ile act. Of course one has to understand the importance of this information and the consequences of being held hostage by this false host to get the full scope of this hostility. Not providing the true mushroom host switches the normal symbiotic aspect of religion to one that only takes from the member and does not give in return what is needed. Churches that are not symbiotic must be categorized as parasitic. The true ‘Lord of Hosts’, the mushroom, does have a personal relationship with those who visit that special realm. Those who receive the invitation and take the offer consume the one true host; indeed do have a personal relationship with the ‘Lord of Hosts’[JI15] . Those who partake of the placebo are unknowingly missing critical experiences prescribed by the fundamental religious basics.

The Allegro-Wasson controversy

The Amanita muscaria craze of the 1960s sparked the interest of several researchers interested in this particular mushroom around the world. Most of those who went on to publish papers or write books took sides in the great debate about whether or not there was an historic Jesus Christ, an actual living, walking, talking being, or not. Allegro stated clearly that Jesus was a mushroom and not a walking talking humanoid but the mushroom, period. Gordon Wasson wrote about Hinduism and claimed that Soma, the Hindu plant god was the A. muscaria mushroom and not a walking talking humanoid. This concept was easier for some Vedic[1] scholars because Soma was not thought to be a walking, talking god-Man but a mythological character sometimes represented as a plant, the sun, the moon etc.

Allegro wrote about the Abrahamic religions being branches evolved from mushroom cults of the old world. The three big religions that developed from the story of Abraham are Judaism, Christianity and Islam (historically created in that order). John Allegro exposes all three of these Abrahamic belief systems as religions that worship the Mushrooms as Gods in the book “The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross”. Wasson wrote about Hinduism being based upon an ancient belief system that believed the mushrooms were gods as well but for some strange reason Wasson could not grasp Allegro’s research as validating and being complimentary to his own. Instead he stated publicly that he did not agree with Allegro and the following are the results of this error.[JI16]

Jack Herer contacted Richard Schultes in 1984 because of an article wherein Schultes and Wasson were quoted as not agreeing with Allegro’s book. Richard Schultes was the Director of the Harvard Botanical Museum at the time and when Jack called he was patched right through. Jack was calling because he had been extensively researching Allegro’s findings and was amazed at the vastness of his work. Jack researching every reference spent thousands of hours going through every footnote and Bible passage that Allegro put forward in the book and he knew the material inside out. Even down to interpreting The Song of Songs (Cant of Cants) word for word in the original Hebrew, meticulously decoding the secrets of the mushrooms hidden within. He could not understand why Schultes would make such a statement, so he called to ask him personally. When he asked the great ethnobotanist why he was in disagreement with Allegro’s thesis he responded that he never said that he disagreed, but that he was not a linguist, philologist or qualified to critique Allegro’s book and that his words were more along the lines of “I’m not qualified to agree or disagree with Allegro’s findings”.  However if Jack wanted to know why Mr. Wasson had said that he disagreed, he could give him a call. Jack did exactly that only at the time Gordon was not at home but on vacation in Florida.

When Jack called back he asked Gordon why he had said that he disagreed with John Allegro’s findings as presented in The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross? Wasson’s response was that he gave Allegro’s book to two of his friends, one a Jewish Rabbi and the other a Monsignor in the Catholic Church. He said both of them returned the books and assured him that “there was not one single word of truth in the book, whatsoever”. Jack told Gordon the same thing he had expressed to Richard Schultes; “The work is impeccable, Allegro is a scholar of the highest magnitude and I have spent the last six months from eight to fifteen hours a day researching his references and findings, he has not made a mistake, excepting one or two minor errors”. Wasson responded that he gave the books to his friends because he trusted their opinions and did not have the time to research it thoroughly himself.

This was an error with repercussions that stretched across time and space, from scholars to casual researchers around the globe. The bottom line is these friends of Wasson’s blew Allegro off because they were unable to understand the subject matter, either that or were sworn to secrecy never to reveal the mushroom/god connection. Neither the Rabbi nor the Monsignor could have possibly known the trouble they would cause by their ignorance or secrecy. The simple fact of the mushrooms being “The God of The Universe” to an average Joe in either of these two religions is likely to be too much to even consider, at least back in the 1960s, before anything about this subject had seen the light of day at all. But to reject the thesis off hand without even looking at it, because anyone who looked at it could not possibly say “there was not one single word of truth in the book, whatsoever” (unless they were complete morons or trying overly hard to hide something desperately) is a Scholarly crime as serious as the theft of intellectual property (plagiarism). Yet strange motivations have always been at the roots of the Pharmacratic Inquisition and the witch-hunts or crusades.[JI17]

Many different theories began to spread regarding who Jesus was or was not. This is a debate that has been ongoing for centuries but now there were some new candidates for the personage. Most people with a Christian background that found out about the mushroom rejected Allegro on the basis of the denial of an historic Christ but accepted that the mushroom played some type of role. The Jewish community rejected Allegro on the grounds of him claiming Yahweh was a mushroom but many began to see new meanings in the Jewish texts and the mystical Kabala was exposed to the uninitiated. There are also Christians who know about the mushroom with a Wassonian slant and believe in a historic Jesus who was revealing the deepest secrets of God by giving the mushrooms to his disciples. The attacks against Allegro were merciless and they are explained in his book “The End of a Road”.  The strangest thing is the way people and even Psychonautical authors treat Allegro with vitriol and disrespect, while ripping off his material without giving him the proper credit left and right. From books to articles and magazines Allegro’s research can be found under the guise of new discoveries presumptuously exploited by unscrupulous authors.
