Birth of the Sturgeon Moon
August 1st, 2019
From the Roman calendar month Augustus, named for the emperor Augustus in 8 BC.
August was originally named Sextilis as the sixth month of an ancient Latin calendar. Over four hundred years after it became the eighth month it was renamed in honour of Augustus Caesar (Octavian). Augustus Caesar clarified and completed the calendar reform of Julius Caesar.
The Sturgeon Moon of August is sometimes referred to as the the Red Moon because, as the Moon rises in August, it appears reddish through any sultry haze. August’s full moon has also been called the Green Corn Moon and the Grain Moon.
